Background of the study

Digital language evolution has become a central focus of sociolinguistic inquiry in the era of social media. In Nigeria, platforms such as Facebook and Twitter offer dynamic spaces where language continuously adapts and transforms. Users on these platforms engage in diverse communicative practices, blending formal structures with innovative digital expressions. Research indicates that such online interactions contribute to a redefinition of language norms, creating a linguistic landscape where abbreviations, emojis, and hybrid constructions become prevalent (Adeola, 2023). Facebook posts often reflect extended discursive practices with layered narratives, while Twitter’s character constraints promote concise, impactful expressions. These distinct digital environments stimulate different evolutionary trajectories, influencing vocabulary, syntax, and even orthography. This study investigates the mechanisms behind digital language evolution in Nigerian social media by comparing user-generated content on Facebook and Twitter. The analysis aims to reveal how platform-specific features shape linguistic practices, leading to both convergence and divergence in language evolution. In doing so, the study also examines the role of user demographics, cultural influences, and technology in driving these changes. Ultimately, this investigation contributes to understanding how digital communication is redefining language in real time and offers a theoretical framework that accounts for rapid linguistic innovation in the digital era (Obi, 2024).

Statement of the problem

Despite significant attention to digital communication, there is a limited understanding of how distinct social media platforms drive language evolution in Nigeria. Existing research often addresses online language change in a general manner without differentiating between platform-specific influences. This lack of comparative analysis hinders the development of comprehensive models that account for the distinct linguistic trajectories fostered by Facebook and Twitter. Educators and policymakers are consequently challenged by a gap in data regarding the evolving norms and structures that define digital language. In particular, the mechanisms through which user engagement, platform constraints, and cultural factors interact to produce linguistic innovation remain underexplored (Chinwe, 2023). This study seeks to fill this gap by providing a detailed examination of language evolution across these platforms, thereby offering insights for sociolinguistic theory and practical recommendations for adapting language education to the digital age.

Objectives of the study

1. To examine how language evolves on Facebook and Twitter among Nigerian users.

2. To identify platform-specific linguistic innovations and their underlying factors.

3. To propose a theoretical framework for understanding digital language evolution.

Research questions

1. What are the key features of language evolution on Facebook versus Twitter?

2. How do platform constraints and user demographics influence these changes?

3. What theoretical models best explain the observed digital language evolution?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it explores the digital evolution of language on two major social media platforms in Nigeria. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory by elucidating the distinct mechanisms of language change driven by platform-specific features. Insights from the study will inform educators and policymakers on how digital communication reshapes linguistic norms, ultimately guiding curriculum development and language planning (Okoro, 2025; Emeka, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

The study is limited to analyzing Facebook and Twitter posts from Nigerian users. It excludes other digital platforms and offline interactions, focusing solely on observable language changes in these two environments.

Definitions of terms

• Digital Language Evolution: The process by which language adapts in response to digital communication.

• Social Media Discourse: Communication practices that occur on digital platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

• Comparative Study: Research that examines similarities and differences between subjects.
